Chigwell School is a mixed independent school that uses the Independents and Quest Admissions exam boards for its 11+ entrance process. The assessment consists of two stages and includes an interview.

If you want your child in a school with genuine room to grow, Chigwell delivers. The senior school and sixth form sit on a 100-acre site in Essex, the facilities are extensive and yet the place — around 744 pupils — keeps the feel of somewhere that actually knows its children. That combination is rarer than it sounds, and it is usually the first thing parents mention.

The history rewards a look. Founded in 1629 by Samuel Harsnett — a Colchester baker's son who rose to become Archbishop of York — the original 17th-century schoolroom is now the school library. Among the boys taught within its walls was William Penn, the Quaker, who went on to found Pennsylvania. Not every school library carries that kind of weight!

Today the atmosphere is warm and unhurried rather than pressured or intensely sporty. Football is the most popular game, with Leyton Orient training on a ground next to the school's own fields — a detail that tends to go down well. A two-storey drama centre keeps music and theatre busy alongside it. It suits a child who wants a broad, close-knit education with space to find what they are good at and time to grow into themselves.
